First to note! Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia (BC), and it is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Vancouver (the city) is located on the mainland. Confusing, right? You’re not coming to Victoria Island, though. That’s here, and you didn’t pack enough layers.
These are all walkable from central downtown (or a quick hop on a bus) unless otherwise indicated. I’ve tried to organise things into little groups by area, so pick your vibe and enjoy! Follow the order if you don’t want to be wandering aimlessly
What am I supposed to do before 11 am! Everything is closed!
Early bird coffee shops
- Habit Coffee (usually opens at 8am – both locations)

Things to do from morning to lunch 9am-2pm (ish)
Cook Street Village and Beacon Hill Park
- Cook Street Village – cute little street with cafes, restaurants groceries, boutiques (Cook & Oscar St. and south)
- Between McKenzie and Oxford, there’s a little food truck area with a cute coffee shop – a couple of others
- Walk south to Dallas Rd. waterfront
- Walk back through Beacon Hill Park (gardens and natural area)
- Loop back to Cook Street Village for lunch
Fernwood & Rocklands
- Start off at Little June Cafe in Fernwood
- Cross the street and put together a little picnic from Fernwood General Store
- Craigdarroch Castle, Historic old home
- Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (opens at 10)
- Lieutenant Governor’s Mansion (can walk around the grounds)
- Eat your picnic lunch
James Bay
- Start off at Nourish for Brunch
- Check out Fisherman’s Wharf and the floating homes
- Tour the Royal BC Museum and/or the BC Legislature
- Tour the childhood home of Canadian artist Emily Carr
The Downtown Tourist Special
- Loop Wharf, Fort, and Government Streets for tourist shopping
- Check out Makers (Govt. St.) & the Market Collective (in the Bay Centre mall) for more unique, locally made gifts
- Sometimes the Bastion Square Market is on
- Visit Miniature World or the Bug Zoo
- Have high tea at the Empress
- Hop on/off bus tours
Chinatown Foodie
- Have an early latte at Bean Around the World Cafe or Union Pacific Coffee
- Get DimSum at Don Mee (opens at 10 or 11)
- Check out the shops and boutiques on Fisgard St. and in FanTan Alley
- Get some pastries from the Wah Lai Yuen Bakery
Health & Wellness
- HAVN Sauna ship in the Inner Harbour (book well in advance)
- Lunch at Nourish Cafe in James Bay (15 minute walk)
Waterfront Walk and Cute Boutiques
- Start off at Hey Happy! for coffee and/or brunch
- Walk across the Johnson St. bridge and down along the waterfront/Songhees Park
- After 11am, loop back for shops on
- Johnson St. (Don’t miss the Regional Assembly of Text, Good Vibe Space)
- Market Square (Don’t miss Paboom, Vintage After Death, Thrift Craft)
- Fan Tan Alley – Chinatown, narrowest street in North America
- Fisgard Street (Don’t miss Fantan Home & Style, the Modern Mercantile)

One with nature
- Rent a car, pack a picnic lunch, and go to:
- Royal Roads University to hike Charlie’s trail, check out the (free) botanical gardens, and see the outside of Hatley Castle (any X-men fans?)
- East Sooke Regional Park (Aylard Farm parking lot) – beachfront hiking
- Thetis Lake Regional Park
- Goldstream Provincial Park – deep forest and waterfalls
- Hike PKOLS – epic views of the ocean/land from the top
- Can’t rent a car? Some of these are a bit of a trek, but:
- Beacon Hill Park has some gorgeous forested areas
- Swan Lake has city noises, but is quite pretty and bus-accessible
- Gowlland Tod Provincial Park: Get off one stop before Butchart Gardens (bus 75) and walk to the Tod Inlet trailhead
- Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park: two buses and about 90 min
- The Malahat Skywalk ($40) has a free shuttle from downtown Victoria
- Butchart Gardens catch bus 75 – “nature” in manicured form
Shop ‘til you Drop – the Vintage Edition
- Get late breakfast at Picnic Too or the Breakfast Shop around Fort and Cook St.
- Around 11, start at Fort St. between Cook & Vancouver and just use your eyeballs – you will spot vintage shops
- Once you get to Blanshard, go north a few blocks and turn left on Yates for Cheers Vintage Collective
Afternoon and Evening 3-7pm (ish)

- Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea (small but mighty aquarium)
- Thrifting (lots between First St., Beacon St., Fifth St., Bevan St.)
- Sidney Island – small island with hikes and beaches (catch bus 72)
- Sidney Spit Ferry runs mid-May to labour day
- Bring a picnic – there is nothing there except nature!
- Also has camping, you could turn this into a weekend trip
- Thetis Lake – scenic lake with hiking (take bus 95 > 53)
- Bring a picnic lunch or stop by Six Mile Pub
- Island View Beach Regional Park
- Rent a bike and head up the Lochside Trail (about 90 min)
- Pack a picnic or stop by Michell’s Farm Market for bakery goods and produce

Without a car

- Register for a spot with Parks Canada (search Gulf Islands)
- Sooke and Whiffin Spit (about two hours each way on the bus)
- Whiffin Spit is a natural area – lots of birds!
- Take the bus back to the Murray Rd. & Sooke Rd. intersection afterward and check out the shops and restaurants

- At 8am, travel with the Lady Rose Marine to Bamfield (sails Tues, Thurs, Sat)
- Do something fun in Bamfield for a couple of days
- Get back to Port Alberni the way you came (Tues/Thurs/Sat at 1:30pm)
